Question: If God is loving, why does he send people to hell?

Response: Hell is not about the fire or its suffering, but the free will God allows his creation to go. People do not want anything to do with God and he will not force you to be with him. You want to be separate from God and he will fulfil that. Since there is no existence of time outside our world, it will be an eternal separation from him. In our life, we have plenty of time to seek him and plenty of time to reject him.

2 Peter 3:9-13 (NIV) says:

9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead, he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.

11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives

12 As you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat.

13 But in keeping with his promise, we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.

Now here in the passage, Peter emphasizes God’s patience and desire for all to come to repentance, contrasting it with the certainty of Christ’s return. He reminds believers to live holy lives in anticipation of this day, which will bring about a transformation of the heavens and earth, ushering in a new creation where righteousness will prevail.

Besides, God sent his son to die for us as the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. The death and punishment we all rightly deserve gets casted to Jesus instead of us. It was the grace that saved us showing his unfailing love.

The verse you’re referring to is Romans 8:38-39 (NIV):

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

This beautifully illustrates the inseparable nature of God’s love for us, emphasizing that nothing in existence can separate us from it.
